The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has commended the Jema Community in the Aowin Municipality for its steadfast resistance against illegal mining, which has helped protect over 15 rivers and other natural resources from the devastation caused by galamsey operators.

The praise came during the second Jema Environmental Stewardship Day and the official launch of the Jema Anti-Galamsey Advocacy (JAGA) on Friday, November 28.

Paa Kwesi Shandorf, Media Relations Officer for the Lands Ministry and spokesperson for the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), represented Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah at the event.

Shandorf lauded the chiefs and people of Jema for their proactive fight against illegal mining, describing the community as a model for other areas to emulate. He also pledged the Ministry’s continued support for the initiative.

“We need the support of the communities where illegal mining activities take place. To see a community like this mount their own watchdogs and develop their own mechanisms to stem the tide is truly commendable. We expect that this will be replicated in other communities,” he said.
