THE INTEGRAL RURAL SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD (IRSL) PROJECT

Image

Background

For over a decade, Jema has successfully resisted illegal mining incursions and remains the only community among the seventeen towns and villages along the 72-kilometre Elubo–Enchi corridor that is free from galamsey. This achievement reflects the community’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

Despite this success, illegal mining operators continue to lure young people with promises of quick financial gains. At the same time, fluctuations in cocoa prices have reduced the attractiveness of traditional farming, particularly among the youth. These challenges underscore the need for alternative livelihood opportunities that are both economically rewarding and environmentally sustainable.

Purpose

To harness the economic potential of Jema and its surrounding communities by creating sustainable livelihood opportunities that strengthen community resilience and consolidate resistance to illegal mining.

Goal

To provide decent, safe, and profitable employment for young people, promote sustainable agricultural production, enhance food security, and improve the livelihoods of rural households while safeguarding the environment.a

Scope

The Integral Rural Sustainable Livelihood (IRSL) Project seeks to provide complementary and sustainable sources of income for rural dwellers while promoting the holistic well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

The project will support the commercial cultivation of high-value, non-traditional crops such as:

  • Pepper
  • Onion
  • Ginger
  • Turmeric
  • Spinach (Kontomire)
  • Tomatoes
  • Carrots

With more than fifty rivers and streams in and around Jema, the community possesses significant potential for year-round irrigation and continuous agricultural production. By leveraging these natural resources responsibly, the project aims to increase productivity, diversify income sources, and create attractive alternatives to illegal mining.

Expected Outcomes

The project will generate economic, social, and environmental benefits through an integrated agricultural value chain, including:

  • Sustainable employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for youth;
  • Increased household incomes for farming families;
  • Transportation and logistics opportunities for commercial drivers;
  • Expanded market opportunities for local and external traders;
  • Increased availability of fresh and nutritious food for consumers;
  • Growth in local commerce and rural economic activity;
  • Strengthened community resistance to illegal mining;
  • Improved environmental conservation and stewardship.
